There is a small amount of play in there and when driving they are resting on the lower support. When you back up they lift up and clunk against the upper support. I'm fairly sure I've heard it make that sound before under the same circumstances, but I don't believe it does it if I'm backing out of a parking space in a level parking lot, for example. WebDec 10, 2012 · Normally a "clank" noise when braking in reverse or again when going forward is simply the pads shifting in the caliper. It happens on most cars with disc brakes and is totally normal. Have a friend listen while you do it and see if it is indeed coming from the disc brakes. -Chris. Save.
